Will I have problems receiving email?
Setting the SMTP Authentication effects only sending of your email. This change has no effect on receiving mail.
Does this effect me?
This setting ONLY effects users whose e-mail programs are configured with an SMTP Outgoing Mail Server setting of either "mail.altitude800.com" or "mail.yourdomain.com". This modification does NOT apply to AOL, Cox Cable, SBC users and Outgoing SMTP mail servers other than those listed above.
Is it difficult to make this change?
No. There are easy-to-follow detailed instructions below and this minor modification will only take 1-2 minutes. The modification must be made immediately.
How can I send email using Altitude 800 if my ISP blocks SMTP Port 25?
SMTP (outgoing mail) port 25 is the default port used by email clients to connect to an email server. Many ISPs and hotels are now blocking port 25 access to 3rd party mail servers to help reduce their spam problems.
The solution to work around port 25 blocking is to use port 587, the default port for authenticated e-mail. The following instructions outline how to change popular email client programs to use SMTP port 587.
If you are using the mail.altitude800.com server for sending mail, go to: TOOLS >ACCOUNTS >MAIL - select the appropriate account >PROPERTIES > SERVERS
the Outgoing (SMTP) Server should be: mail.altitude800.com
Ensure that the box "Server Requires Authentication" is checked
Select "SETTINGS", then select "Use same settings as incoming mail server"
Click Apply, then OK
Click on ADVANCED
Change the "Outgoing Mail server port" to a setting of 587
The "Incoming Mail Server port" should remain 110
Click Apply, then OK
How do I check my SMTP settings and configure my e-mail program for SMTP Authentication?
Most e-mail programs support SMTP Authentication, although several do not (particularly "Claris Emailer"). Choose your platform and e-mail program listed below. Follow the written instructions closely and do not change any other settings unless specifically outlined in the procedure.
Macintosh OS 7.x - OS X
Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP
If your e-mail program is not listed, please refer to the online help in your program, or to your printed documentation. Also, it may help to look at some of the programs we have listed, as the context may be relevant to your e-mail program.
